An astrology turned toward the soul.
Esoteric astrology presents itself as the reverse of traditional astrology: it favours the Ascendant and the spiritual purpose of the soul over the Sun and the personality.
According to Bailey, the astrologer is invited to think in wholes, to trace things back to their sources and deeper causes rather than stopping at passing effects. Each human being is said to be linked to several rays, as are peoples, countries, the Earth and the different kingdoms of life.
A complement to your personality reading: soul astrology is offered as an extra, after or alongside the reading of your natal chart. It does not replace that reading and is not offered on its own.

The Ascendant · the soul’s purpose
According to Bailey, the Ascendant shows the distant possibilities and the spiritual purpose of this incarnation and those to come. With its esoteric rulers, it reveals the soul’s purpose and the way forward.

The Sun · the personality
The Sun sign describes the physical, mental and spiritual nature, how the personality responds to the soul, the degree of integration already reached and possible group relationships.

Exoteric and esoteric rulers
Alongside the traditional rulers of the signs, Bailey adds esoteric rulers. They concern the person engaged on a spiritual path, an evolution unfolding over several lives.

Sacred and non-sacred planets
The rays are expressed through seven sacred planets, said to touch the person on the initiatory path more directly; the non-sacred planets mainly influence humanity as a whole.

The source of the rays
Bailey places the origin of the seven rays in the seven stars of the Great Bear. Each ray is said to be transmitted through a triangle of three zodiac signs, its energy passing through one of them.

For Bailey, the seven rays are seven streams of force from the solar Logos, each carrying its virtues, its challenges and the qualities it invites us to acquire.
I Will or power
Strength, courage, steadfastness, the ability to act for the good. Challenge: pride and the wish to dominate. To cultivate: humility, tenderness, patience. Aries, Leo, Capricorn.
II Love and wisdom
The most powerful of the seven according to Bailey: calm, patience, intuition, wisdom. Challenge: coldness and withdrawal into study. To cultivate: compassion, selflessness. Gemini, Virgo, Pisces.
III Active intelligence
Broad vision, clear intellect, a philosophical approach. Challenge: intellectual pride, scattering, criticism. To cultivate: precision, common sense, tolerance. Cancer, Libra, Capricorn.
IV Harmony, beauty and art
Beauty as an expression of truth: sensitivity, generosity, keen perception. Challenge: inner turmoil and strong passions. To cultivate: serenity, trust, balance. Taurus, Scorpio, Sagittarius.
V Concrete knowledge
Precision, perseverance, common sense, independent thinking. Challenge: harsh criticism and narrow-mindedness. To cultivate: sympathy, open-mindedness, love. Leo, Sagittarius, Aquarius.
VI Idealism and devotion
Devotion, loyalty, firmness of purpose, ideals. Challenge: fanaticism, jealousy, hasty judgement. To cultivate: tolerance, serenity, common sense. Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces.
VII Order, ceremony and magic
Organisation, perseverance, creativity, a sense of ritual. Challenge: formalism and excessive routine. To cultivate: a sense of unity, humility, openness. Aries, Cancer, Capricorn.
